Boatman’s Quarterly Review (BQR)

Our newsletter has “grown up” over the years since Grand Canyon River Guides’ inception in 1988.  The newsletter didn’t even have a name back then – just a few mimeographed pages (yes indeed, back in the stone age before copy machines and computers).  In 1991 we at least gave it a name, albeit a rather unimaginative one, calling it The News – a bit more substantial, but a far cry from what it is today.  It wasn’t until 1994 that we changed the name yet again to the Boatman’s Quarterly Review. Check out decades worth of amazing newsletters posted here and peruse to your heart's content. What gems may be found in this astounding body of work? Take a look!!

Note: Earle Spamer's incredible online bibliography is a fantastic research tool and it includes all BQR articles. In addition to Google, this is a great way to search BQR's if you're not sure what issue a particular article appeared in. Here’s the scoop:

  • All voluminous bibliographical and historical resources that Earle Spamer has put together, can be found here: Raven's Perch Media – Bibliographical Resources in the Grand Canyon and Lower Colorado River Regions of the United States and Mexico (ravensperch.org). However, there are so many volumes that it can be difficult to figure out where to look, so let’s narrow it down a bit:

    • If you’re looking for a BQR article, chances are it can be found in “Just the Bibliography, General Publications, Part 2” which can be downloaded for free here. Use the Find tool at the top of the pdf (the little magnifying glass), or hit Ctrl/F.

    • If you’re looking for a memorial article, it may be found in “Just the Bibliography, Memorials, Part 4, which can be downloaded for free here. Again, use the Find tool, or Ctrl/F.
