About Us

Back in 1988, an intrepid group of guides got together with the brilliant idea of creating an inclusive organization designed to give the river community at large a unified voice in the protection of the Colorado River through Grand Canyon.

Since then, GCRG has been here to watch out for the Canyon and to help the guides who work there, while envisioning and working towards a river experience that is positive, supportive, safe, and welcoming for all.

With over 1,700 members, our non-profit 501(c)(3) educational and environmental organization weighs in on issues ranging from operation of Glen Canyon Dam to uranium mining near the rim, protection of the Little Colorado River, and more.  We publish a fantastic magazine (the Boatman’s Quarterly Review) full of information, oral histories, art, stories, and more.  We host a rocking training weekend every spring. And we do other great stuff, too.

By aiming to protect Grand Canyon and the Colorado River experience, Grand Canyon River Guides is an organization that seeks out ways to preserve, protect and defend the Grand Canyon while respecting all those living in and around it.  Towards that end:

  • GCRG recognizes the eleven affiliated tribes of Grand Canyon as the traditional stewards of this rich cultural landscape and commit to elevating native voices. We urge you to read Grand Canyon River Guides’ Land Acknowledgement Statement, and let’s all listen, learn, and move forward together.

  • Grand Canyon River Guides, Inc. (GCRG) is committed to fostering a safe and welcoming work environment as well as a positive river culture in which all individuals are treated with absolute respect and dignity, while emphasizing open and honest communication and accountability. Please read GCRG’s Nondiscrimination, Anti-Harassment, Anti-Retaliation, and Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy, which extends to all employees and non-employees of GCRG. Together, we can make a difference!

  • As a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, you can find out more about GCRG’s assets, programs, grants, and other important financial information on our annual IRS Form 990, and our Program Service Accomplishments, as we continue to work towards our mission and goals.
